What does Yoga means to You?

Today’s discussion is what Yoga means to you?

What is your Favorite Yoga Practice and Why? Please include a short description of your “style”, years of practice and how it makes you feel after the practice. Which yogic concepts resonates with you mostly ( physical, philosophical, spiritual, etc.).

I’ve been practicing and teaching yoga since 2008. I’ve got into the practice for a physical pain, evolving into much more. My definition of yoga is: Yoga is a practice to cultivate and sustain attention on the most needed subject. When I can sustain attention and rid of the “scattered” brain, I can perceive the reality a little better. For example, I love hiking with my dog and he is mostly leashed. If another dog is off-leash running towards us, I can react with fear and anger at the dog and the owner or I can see things for what they really are – I need to take control of my fear by taking a few deep breaths and focus on myself to manage my energy and my dog with plenty of tools that I’ve learned in my dog training.

    Last school year I had my son in an after school yoga class. I think it’s wonderful for helping everyone manage big feelings and increase attention. I’m sporadic with yoga, although I know I won’t see the benefits from it unless practiced regularly.

    I love hot yoga! I have been practicing for a few years, but only 6-10 classes per year. I am the least flexible person so yoga can be great afterwards or uncomfortable during. I love when the class is over and I feel so relaxed and I enjoy the cool down…

    Thanks for your comments! Yoga is a state of mind with many benefits. It can be religious, but doesn’t have to. I’ve taught to all kinds of groups from children to deeply religious – just needed to modify a bit for each.

    Wow! Hot yoga is too much for me…Actually, I take very light and easy classes, but mostly I practice at home for about 20 minutes a day. My practice is very simple, easy and sustainable – just to get my mind anchored.

    True you can see benefit from long term correct practice, but I also think you can benefit from sporadic classes as well!

    Started out with Hatha yoga back in the day before there were styles. At that time there were lineages but no real style differentiation. Today mostly practice, Jñana yoga, karma yoga, and Bhakti yoga. Been contemplating getting on the mat again now that my shoulder is good to go again.
    Great question. It’s always interesting to find out where people are coming from.

    Hi Christa,

    I gave up group classes in favor of the home practice. I’ve studied, practiced and taught yoga since 2008. I’ve practiced Iyengar for 2 years, Jivamukti for about 1 year, Ashtanga for 2…Nothing benefits me more then my simple home practice, which consists of some basic movement coordinated with breath (raising arms on inhalation and lowering on exhalation) following by breathing (inhale for 5-6 and exhale for 5-6 pause for 2 sometimes with manta) and meditation focusing on breathing or any particular object. My practice lasts about 20 minutes. With simple practice it is very easy to maintain consistency. Especially since my skiing accident I can’t practice anything beyond simple :-)

    I am relatively newish to yoga only practising about a year now. In the beginning (before blogging!) I was quite regular but have since been quite a bit distracted and busy. I do find though, that when I make the concerted effort to get myself back on the mat (which I did manage at 6am this morning!) I absolutely love it, and more importantly, need it! Vinyasa flow is my favourite although a Yin class is important once in a while too. Yoga really brings a sense of calm, mindfulness and strength to my day. It’s when you are busiest that you really need it most! Thanks for asking! x

    Thanks for your comments! Great that you are able to make some time for yoga :-) I have a simple daily practice. I used to teach 3 times a week in New York for quite a few years and it was so fun. Like you, I got quite distracted after we moved to CO and got a house and adapted a puppy followed by a ski accident. But I am hoping to get back to teaching as soon as I “unbusy” myself. In the meantime, have an idea to create simple yoga practice.
